Nurses With a BSN Are in Demand
More nurses in California are earning BSNs, and that is great news for the state with the highest population. A California Board of Registered Nursing survey found that almost 62 percent of California’s nurses had a BSN or higher in 2014, up from 53 percent in 2012. Nursing in California is improving as the nursing workforce becomes more qualified, leading to better patient care.
Better-Prepared Nurses Correlate With Better Patient Outcomes
When hospitals increased the number of BSN-prepared nurses on staff by 10 percent, patient mortality was reduced by nearly 11 percent, according to a 2014 study published in Medical Care. The study also discovered that when hospitals increased the amount of care provided by BSN-prepared nurses to 80 percent, their patients had decreased readmission rates and spent less time in the hospital. Increasing nurses’ education with bridge programs such as RN to BSN online programs is a win-win-win for patients, nurses and employers. California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) offers an online RN to BSN program that is ideal for working RNs in California who wish to continue their education without giving up their jobs.
Registered Nurse Shortages Impact the Country, Patients
Registered Nurse is one of the most popular jobs in the country. Nursing job boards list job openings across the country for highly skilled and highly trained nurses, but there are often not enough qualified candidates. The demand for nurses with a BSN has affected nursing in California and across the country. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the economy to add 439,300 nursing jobs between 2014 and 2024.
